Jewish Folklore  in Bethlehem

The Legend of Rachel's Tomb

According to Jewish tradition, Rachel, the beloved wife of Jacob and mother of Joseph and Benjamin, died while giving birth to Benjamin near Bethlehem. Her husband Jacob buried her on the side of the road to Ephrath (which is now Bethlehem) and placed a marker over her grave. Over time, the marker became a tomb and is now known as Rachel's Tomb. It is considered a holy site and a place of pilgrimage for Jews, Christians, and Muslims.

The Story of David and Goliath

One of the most famous stories from the Bible takes place in the West Bank, where the Philistine giant Goliath challenged the Israelites to send out a champion to fight him. David, a shepherd boy from Bethlehem, volunteered and defeated Goliath with a single stone from his sling. This story has become a symbol of courage and faith for Jews and Christians around the world.

The Legend of the Olive Trees

In Bethlehem, there is a famous grove of olive trees that are said to be more than 2,000 years old. According to legend, these trees were planted by King Herod the Great, who ruled over Judea during the time of Jesus. The trees were originally planted to provide shade for travelers on the road from Jerusalem to Bethlehem, but over time they became a symbol of the region's natural beauty and spiritual significance.
